- Edge: LEARNING TO EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED
- A black swan is an outlier, an event that lies beyond the realm of normal expectations. Most people expect all swans to be white because that's what their experience tells them; a black swan is by definition a surprise. Nevertheless, people tend to concoct explanations for them after the fact, which makes them appear more predictable, and less random, than they are. Our minds are designed to retain, for efficient storage, past information that fits into a compressed narrative. This distortion, called the hindsight bias, prevents us from adequately learning from the past.
- Cognitive Daily: If you want to persuade a woman, look straight at her
- There is a considerable body of research showing that eye contact is a key component of social interaction. Not only are people more aroused when they are looked at directly, but if you consistently look at the person you speak to, you will have much more social influence over that person than you would if you averted your gaze.
- Living small by the house
- Down a rambling residential road on the outskirts of Sebastopol, the dream house sits like a testament to discriminating taste....This dream house is the love child of artist-builder Jay Shafer, who lovingly hand-crafted it. The stainless-steel kitchen, gleaming next to the natural wood interior, is outfitted with customized storage and built-ins. From his bed, Shafer can gaze into the Northern California sky through a cathedral window. In his immaculate office space, a laptop sits alongside rows of architectural books and magazines -- many featuring his house on the cover. And from the old-fashioned front porch, he can look out on a breathtaking setting: an apple orchard in full bloom....But in an era when bigger is taken as a synonym for better, calling Shafer...

- "the documentary very powerfully compiles some of the most incriminating facts, and it unapologetically identifies many of the guiltiest and most destructive wrongdoers in our government and in the press." Really excellent review of Moyer's documentary, which I watched with great interest. Makes a strong case that the invasion of Iraq was orchestrated by the Bush admin. with the complicity of many journalists.

- A Montreal male recently had the option of sleeping with a member of the opposite sex whenever he wanted....But he also had another female in his life, one who only occasionally fulfilled his sexual desires....Left in a room with both sexual partners, he found himself instantly drawn to the one who had been playing hard to get.

- ...Roman Catholic Church requires nothing short of hubris. And at a time when the continent could use some spiritual guidance, the Church is too often AWOL on the most difficult questions of the age, choosing instead to chase the past.

- In March 1982, 25 years ago, the small town of Kennesaw responding to a handgun ban in Morton Grove, Ill. unanimously passed an ordinance requiring each head of household to own and maintain a gun. Since then, despite dire predictions of "Wild West" showdowns and increased violence and accidents, not a single resident has been involved in a fatal shooting as a victim, attacker or defender.
