- Brain injury tied to halt in smoking | Chicago Tribune
- scientists have discovered that people who experienced stroke damage to a prune-sized spot deep within the brain suddenly lost the urge to light up. The research, published Friday in the journal Science, appears to underscore nicotine's far-reaching grip on a smoker's neural circuitry--and how much there remains to learn about it. Until now, addiction researchers have largely ignored the brain structure implicated in the study--a region called the insula.

- "The livestock sector emerges as one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global." It turns out that raising animals for food is a primary cause of land degradation, air pollution, water shortage, water pollution, loss of biodiversity, and not least of all, global warming.
- Drug helps heart disease-related depression
- A drug can combat depression common among patients with severe heart disease, but psychological counseling doesn't seem to work, a study said on Tuesday. Citalopram is one of a class of antidepressants taken by millions, commonly called SSRIs, that include Eli Lilly's Prozac. The study found that the drug worked to combat depression by easing its most common symptoms, with the effect apparent within six weeks. But, it concluded, counseling did not have an impact.

- Actual cause of death to be a bacterial infection. The organism that killed Gadsden, called Nocardia, had clogged the blood vessels leading to his brain. But the acinetobacteria had been steadily draining his vital resources when he could least afford it. For weeks, it had been flourishing in his body, undetected by the doctors at Haley, resisting a constant assault by the most potent antibiotics in the medical arsenal. Since OPERATION Iraqi Freedom began in 2003, more than 700 US soldiers have been infected or colonized with Acinetobacter baumannii.

- Spanish-American War is over. You're due a refund - MSN Money
- How to grab the money. The money is out there for you -- you just have to jump through a few hoops in order to get it. Here are a few things to know, courtesy of Dick Hansen at refundphonetax.com and also from the Internal Revenue Service:
- You are to claim the refund on the 2006 tax form that you file in 2007.
- You can opt for a standard refund of $30 (if you have one exemption), $40 (if you have two), $50 (if you have three) or $60 (if you have more). This option requires no documentation from you.
- If you have (or want to go through the trouble of procuring) your telephone bill statements from March 2003 to July 2006, you can get a refund based on amounts you were actually charged. In most cases, this can amount to a lot more than the standard refund -- perhaps as much as $100 to $300 for many of us. You'll need to fill out IRS Form 8913 for this.

- Does High-Fructose Corn Syrup Have to Be in Everything? by Wilton D. Alston
- In their landmark book, "You: The Owner's Manual," they state: "One of the biggest evil influences on our diet is the presence of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), a sugar substitute that itself is a sugar found in soft drinks and many other sweet, processed foods. The problem is that HCFS inhibits leptin secretion, so you never get the message that you're full. And it never shuts off gherin, so, even though you have food in your stomach, you constantly get the message that you're hungry."
