- Saving Their Community , Ed Bradley Reports On Environmental Mission In Washington D.C. - CBS News
- (CBS) Anacostia, which is just a few blocks from Capitol Hill in Washington D.C., has been called one of the worst neighborhoods in America. It is polluted by poverty, drugs and violent crime....The murder rate there for African-American men is so high that some see themselves as an endangered species. It's cut off from the rest of Washington by the Anacostia River, which is as polluted as the neighborhood....Saving both the river and the neighborhood is the goal of a group that teaches young people about the environment, and uses that experience in an effort to change the neighborhood and their lives. Correspondent Ed Bradley reports. Anacostia is a neighborhood where unemployment is epidemic and 38 percent of its residents live below the poverty line.

7 July 2007
"NOW's presentation "Endangered Species" tells a story of urban blight and community faith. One of America's gleaming symbols of freedom and prosperity, Washington, DC is also home to one of the most impoverished and polluted neighborhoods in America. On the banks of the Anacostia River, the Southeast section of the nation's capital has been an environmental disaster area and a home for violence. But today a non-profit group called the Earth Conservation Corps (ECC), composed of young adults from under-resourced communities, is bringing hope to this neighborhood under siege." I watched this piece and was weeping by the end. Diamond Teague, Darius, Jerome. Powerful, stuff.
- Earth Conservation Corps | Welcome
- "The Earth Conservation Corps is a nonprofit organization founded in 1989 as a White House domestic policy initiative. The Earth Conservation Corps provides hands-on education, environmental training, professional experience, and leadership skills for disadvantaged young people between the ages of 17-25 years old. As corps members improve their own lives, they rebuild the environmental, social, and economic health of their communities."
- Race Matters - Earth Conservation Corps, Anacostia, DC
- The Earth Conservation Corps (ECC) was founded in 1989 and takes as its mission "providing hands-on environmental education, job training and community service programs for people of all ages from diverse backgrounds, with an emphasis on serving at-risk youth from the inner-city neighborhoods of Washington D.C."

- Earwax
- Self Treatment For Earwax Most cases of earwax blockage respond to home treatments used to soften wax if there is no hole in the eardrum. Patients can try placing a few drops of mineral oil, baby oil, glycerin, or commercial ear wax removal drops, such as Debrox, Mack's Wax AwayTM, Murine, or Physicians' ChoiceTM in the ear. These remedies are not as strong as the prescription wax softeners but are effective for many patients. Rarely, people have allergic reactions to commercial preparations. Detergent drops such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide may also aid in the removal of wax. Patients should know that rinsing the ear canal with hydrogen peroxide results in oxygen bubbling off and water being left behind-wet, warm ear canals make good incubators for growth of bacteria. Flushing the ear canal with rubbing alcohol displaces the water and dries the canal skin. If alcohol causes severe pain, it suggests the presence of an eardrum perforation.

- "Shoes are essential to civilized life, and they bring with them a distinctly civilized manner of walking: lock the knee, and brace a controlled fall on the heel; roll the foot forward, rocking into another locked-knee heel-fall. It's difficult to walk any other way while wearing shoes, and you'll often find this described as the way humans walk. But of course, humans are not born with shoes on, nor did we evolve in shoes. Every human begins walking a different way, and needs to be meticulously trained to walk like this." Whatever you do, Never Run or Jog Barefoot.

- This is one reason I am so angry with the Catholic Church. In my book, declaring that condoms should NOT be used to prevent spread of AIDS is a damn-able sin. The Catholic Church should be ashamed.
- I thought my wife was a "victim of technology"...
- But as I thought more, I realized it's really ME that's the victim. Because it's me that is expected to figure out how to work anything with buttons and CPU. Because it's me that gets blamed when anything electronic doesn't work. Because it's me that's expected to fix any problem she encounters with the technology in our home. My wife is NOT the victim of technology. I am...And I wouldn't have it any other way :)
- What the f$#% is this?
- I stared at this for a bit, tilting my head, trying to figure out what the f%#% this was for. This diagram just didn't do it for me. I'm hoping it's not a sexual toy...but who knows.

- "Hartig and colleagues suggest that being stuck indoors on vacation can limit mental recuperation. On the other hand, when able to roam outdoors, we can exert ourselves at a favourite sport or simply linger in the park. Psychologically, beautiful scenery can distract us from our troubles, help us forget our normal stressful environments and reconnect us to nature...This is a nice theory that is intuitively attractive and plausible. The problem is how to test it scientifically."
