- "The dollar has depreciated so much that America is on the sale rack," said Sung Won Sohn, a professor of economics at California State University.
"America has such an appetite for foreign goods -- Chinese imports and oil -- that U.S. dollars have gone overseas. Now, many Americans aren't happy that foreign companies are buying pieces of America with the money we gave them in the first place," Sohn said. - 7 Universities Offering Free Courses Online | How To Split An Atom

This post is an excellent example of how the religious must often create convoluted rationalizations to maintain their faith. Human expertise in this rationalization process can help the religious justify any action. That is where my dispute with religion lies.
Beliefs guide behavior, so if the beliefs are unfounded, any behavior can be justified. Indeed, because beliefs guide behavior, using religion as a national moral foundation is a huge mistake. Religious beliefs are, by definition, a matter of faith; therefore, a moral code based on religion is always vulnerable to debate. The cultural wisdom brought from a religious tradition can be a guide but not the final authority on what is moral....But I'm getting way off topic :) - MAG-FED 20MM RIFLE - Anzio Ironworks

- "Nuclear weapons could be used to stop earth-bound asteroids, but in most instances, they are not the best option, said Apollo astronaut Rusty Schweickart during a public lecture this Wednesday in San Francisco....The venerable scientist explained that all but the largest heavenly bodies can be redirected by rear-ending or towing them with an unmanned spacecraft. But last year, NASA issued a report stating that using nukes is the best strategy to prevent a catastrophic collision with earth."

- "What worries me is the complete lack of accountability by Fannie's and Freddie's executives, as well as Wall Street investment bankers also now being insured by taxpayers. We've created the worst form of socialized capitalism--private gains combined with public losses. These executives and bankers are among the best paid in all of corporate America. Their organizations are treated as if they're giant investor-driven private sector entities as long as they're healthy. But when they start to go down the tubes they become public entities with public responsibilities, and the rest of us have to bail them out."

- SDSURF News - Standard Mileage Rate Change Effective 07/01/08
- The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced that the standard mileage rate has increased to 58.5¢ a mile for business miles driven after June 30, 2008. Therefore, effective for travel after June 30, 2008, a claimant may be reimbursed for business use of a privately owned automobile at the not-to-exceed approved rate of fifty eight and one half cents ($.585) per mile. Please check with your sponsored research administrator regarding those grants and/or contracts which may require more restrictive reimbursement rates. SDSU Research Foundation’s adherence to the approved IRS mileage rate will ensure that we do not create a situation where funds provided in excess of the approved rate become taxable income to the traveler and therefore subject to withholding tax
