- Mind map - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- "There are benefits to be gained by applying a wide range of graphic organizers, and it follows that the mind map, specifically, is not equally suited to all learning tasks."
"Scholarly research by Farrand, Hussain, and Hennessy (2002) found that the mind map technique had a limited but significant impact on recall only, in undergraduate students (a 10% increase over baseline for a 600-word text only) as compared to preferred study methods (a −6% increase over baseline). This improvement was only robust after a week for those in the mind map group, and there was a significant decrease in motivation compared to the subjects' preferred methods of note taking. They suggested that learners preferred to use other methods because using a mind map was an unfamiliar technique, and its status as a "memory enhancing" technique engendered reluctance to apply it.[4] Pressley, VanEtten, Yokoi, Freebern, and VanMeter (1998) found that learners tended to learn far better by focusing on the content of learning material rather than worrying over any one particular form of note taking."
Buzan has trademarked "Mind Map," which reduces the credibility of his ascertains further. It's a tool, and I think the element of association and organization helps memory recall, but you've gotta go with what works for you. For me, idea mapping is great in organizing info and seeing the whole picture (vs. outline's linear record). - YouTube - Maximise the Power of Your Brain - Tony Buzan MIND MAPPING

- "She is Molly. The young pony was abandoned by her owners when Katrina hit Southern Louisiana. After spending several weeks wondering, she was found and taken to an animal shelter. While there, she was attacked by a pit bull, her front leg becoming infected and needing amputation.
"Doctors were impressed how cooperative the pony was during surgery: she allowed people to handle her and shifted her body weight as to protect her leg, almost as she understood what is happening. She recovered amazingly and now serves as an example in shelters, hospitals or anywhere where people need hope. A book featuring Molly has been published to set the example for many other people. The little pony survived the hurricane, an amputation and now she is giving hope to many more."

I'm becoming enthralled with mind maps. Where an outline is linear, a mind map is two (if not three) dimensions. That extra dimension adds enormous perspective to the ideas in view. Entries (called nodes) can be easily rearranged to test relationships between nodes. There's just something profound in that extra level of perspective. Something profoundly missing from a linear outline. Here's an example. - Influential Marketing Blog

- Indiana Jones Movie
- Like so many others of my generation (*cough*), I was quite excited to see the story (and character) of Indiana Jones revived. After seeing it last night, I'm sorry to say it was a total dud, a silly film that contributed near nothing to the myth, legend, and character of Henry Jones, Junior...Junior indeed.
First half hour was fun, and I liked the many homages to the previous films. But beyond that, the story, the climax, and final scenes were absolutely ridiculous. Waste of time. Thumbs way down. One of the worst movies I've seen this year. - HyperCard: What Could Have Been

- "After September 11, 2001, there was a great deal of speculation that the terrorists or their associates had traded in the option market on advanced knowledge of the impending attacks. This paper generates systematic information about option market activity that can be used to assess the option trading that precedes any event of interest. Examination of the option trading leading up to September 11 reveals that there was an unusually high level of put buying. This finding is consistent with informed investors having traded options in advance of the attacks."

While one back-cover review calls it "a true-to-life fairy tale, one that inspires you to believe in happy endings," that's evidence that the reviewer didn't read or understand the book, not an accurate description of the book, which will leave you disturbed and uncomfortable."

It pisses me off that, more-often-than-not, we are unwitting test subjects for drugs already on the market. Statins, the ubiquitous cholesterol lower drugs, are a good case. There are no long-term animal or human studies of the drugs, so those taking statins are de facto long-term test subjects.
Add this assertion to the mix: According the Gary Taubes (Good Calories, Bad Calories), when drug companies fund scientific studies, they own the data and results from those studies. And if those results are negative, the drug company can legally choose to refuse to disclose the negative results. That is not science. - Player Bio: Allison Stokke :: Outdoor Track

- Platypus DNA determined -- -- chicagotribune.com
- Yet in its wackiness, Wilson said, the platypus genome offers an unprecedented glimpse of how evolution made its first stabs at producing mammals. It tells the tale of how early mammals learned to nurse their young; how they matched poisonous snakes at their own venomous game; and how they struggled to build a system of fertilization and gestation that would eventually, through relatives that took a different tack, give rise to the first human beings.

- 60 Minutes to watch... and a lifetime to act
- Watched this piece on 60 inutes and was so impressed with Paul Farmer and the organization he co-founded Partners in Health (PIH). The stories literally moved me to tears--I sent a donation right after the segment. Farmer is a smart determined guy who is making health care available in some really troubled parts of the world like Haiti and Rowanda. His approach is collaborative--he doesn't want these places to be totally dependent on foreign workers, so he's training natives to take care of their own people. He's also being smart about getting drugs to people in need at lower costs by negotiating with manufacturers to produce lower cost generics. He's treating people with AIDS in these countries, drug resistant TB. As he put it, the health care PIH can provide is better than some receive in the U.S. Indeed, some U.S. health agencies are using PIH as a model for inexpensive health care delivery. Tremendous impact. The dedication he has is obvious.
