World’s First Chlorophyll Organic Battery Runs on Any Liquid : CleanTechnica
Professor Chungpin Hovering Liao of National Formosa University in Taiwan has created the world’s first chlorophyll organic battery. The battery can use any liquid—even urine—to power up. It doesn’t take much time for liquids to start juicing the battery, either. Within 10 seconds of being doused with liquid, the battery starts providing power.

Obesity, Sedentary Life Blamed For Soaring Rates Of Diabetes In The South
The rate of new cases of diabetes almost doubled in the US in the past ten years, fueled by growing obesity and sedentary lifestyle, the government revealed on Friday.

CAUSE of rising rates of diabetes: A diet high in sugars and carbs. Health policy ignores this reality, but the cause of the rise in type II diabetes is very likely a diet high in sugars and carbs, which, among other things, taxes the pancreas (the main organ involved in blood glucose regulation) and leads to insulin resistance. Seems like a no brainer but this perspective is being ignored.

Statins may cut pneumonia death, blood clot risks | Health | Reuters
Cholesterol-fighting drugs known as statins reduced the risk of dying from pneumonia or developing dangerous blood clots in the legs, adding to a growing list of benefits from the popular drugs, two research groups said on Monday.

I'm convinced that the harmful side-effects of statins far outweigh its healthful benefits. Indeed, my cardiologist admitted that any real, cardiovascular benefits of statins are probably NOT due to its cholesterol lower effect but on the drugs' anti-coagulation and anti-inflammation effects.

I believe I can gain those important benefits more reliably and more safely through dietary and lifestyle changes than I could by taking a statin.

On average, white evangelical Protestants make their sexual debut to use the festive term of social-science researchers shortly after turning sixteen. Among major religious groups, only black Protestants begin having sex earlier...Another key difference in behavior, Regnerus reports, is that evangelical Protestant teen-agers are significantly less likely than other groups to use contraception.

Survival Myths Debunked
FOOD MYTHS - I found this bit of advice very interesting.

Plants Are a Good Source of Food in the Wilderness - Unless you're a certified expert not just in plants, but in the plants of the given region you happen to be in, stay the hell away from the plants!

Here's the facts...

  • ALL fur bearing mammals are safe to eat, and will provide you with nutrients and calories.
  • ALL 6 legged insects are safe to eat, and will provide you with nutrients and calories.
  • Almost all freshwater fish and almost all birds are safe to eat, and will provide you with nutrients and calories.
  • MOST plants will harm you, make you sick, or worse... poison you. There are actually very few that will provide you with any nutrients or calories.

It's a simple equation... if it walks, crawls, swims, or flies, the odds are in your favor that it's not only safe to eat, but that it will provide you with the nutrition and energy your body needs. If it sits there like... umm... like a plant, the odds are against you both for your own physical safety, and for nutritional content. It's just not worth the gamble unless you're absolutely sure!

Nutrition & Metabolism | Full text | The calorically restricted ketogenic diet, an effective alternative therapy for malignant brain cancer
The results indicate that KetoCal has anti-tumor and anti-angiogenic effects in experimental mouse and human brain tumors when administered in restricted amounts. The therapeutic effect of KetoCal for brain cancer management was due largely to the reduction of total caloric content, which reduces circulating glucose required for rapid tumor growth. A dependency on glucose for energy together with defects in ketone body metabolism largely account for why the brain tumors grow minimally on either a ketogenic-restricted diet or on a standard-restricted diet. Genes for ketone body metabolism should be useful for screening brain tumors that could be targeted with calorically restricted high fat/low carbohydrate ketogenic diets. This preclinical study indicates that restricted KetoCal is a safe and effective diet therapy and should be considered as an alternative therapeutic option for malignant brain cancer.

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson needs to change his reading list. Instead of reading the balance sheets and income statements of the failing banking industry, he needs to read Henry Hazlitt's classic book Economics in One Lesson. It will cost Paulson far less than the $700 billion that he is spending on the bailout, and he might just learn a little economics in the process.

Can a High-Fat Diet Beat Cancer? - TIME
Absolutely fascinating. Is it possible that cancer cells need glucose (because cancer cells' mitochondria don't work well and can't metabolize fat). So if you eliminate glucose (carbs) from the diet, cancer cells starve. Could that be true?
The Blog of Michael R. Eades, M.D. » Carbohydrates are addictive
Since cancers can't really get nourishment from anything but glucose, it stands to reason that cutting off this supply would, at the very least, slow down tumor growth, especially in aggressive, fast-growing cancers requiring a lot of glucose to fuel their rapid growth.

Essay - McCain and Obama Health Plans Promote Myth of Prevention as Cost Cutter - NYTimes.com
The myth is that like magic, preventive medicine will simultaneously reduce costs and improve health. I totally agree.
The Blog of Michael R. Eades, M.D. » Preventative care: Not all it's cracked up to be
So, we have a healthy guy who goes in for a little preventative care and comes out with coronary angst and a prescription for a medicine that does him absolutely no good and that even may have been doing him harm. He then underwent yet another screening procedure to allay the fears that had been created by the first round of preventative care. He (or his insurance company: read you and I) paid several hundred dollars for the first go round, another couple of hundred for the three month's worth of Lipitor, and another $700 for the heart scan. After at least $1500 of someone's money, the guy isn't any better off than he was before he went for his physical exam. In fact, he would have been much better off had he never gone to the doctor in the first place.

Antioxidants and Free radicals
Free radicals are atoms or groups of atoms with an odd unpaired number of electrons and can be formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules. Once formed these highly reactive radicals can start a chain reaction, like dominoes. Their chief danger comes from the damage they can do when they react with important cellular components such as DNA, or the cell membrane. Cells may function poorly or die if this occurs. To prevent free radical damage the body has a defense system of antioxidants.
Understanding Free Radicals and Antioxidants
What are free radicals? Why are they damaging to the human body? And how does vitamin E and the other antioxidant nutrients help protect the body against free radical damage? We?ll attempt to answer these questions and help you understand why eating 5-8 servings per day of anti-oxidant rich fruits and vegetables can benefit your health.

...distractions may be helpful in coming up with creative solutions to a certain problem, but must be followed by a period of conscious thought to ensure that we are aware of those solutions and can apply them.
