- "We have been led to believe that we must make our health care choices only within the current structure of a predatory, for-profit insurance system which makes money not providing health care. We cannot fault the insurance companies for being what they are. But we can fault legislation in which the government incentivizes the perpetuation, indeed the strengthening, of the for-profit health insurance industry, the very source of the problem. When health insurance companies deny care or raise premiums, co-pays and deductibles they are simply trying to make a profit. That is our system."

- Study: Name-brand canned foods have BPA
- Consumer Reports found that the highest levels of BPA were found in Del Monte Fresh Cut Green Beans Blue Lake, Progresso Vegetable Soup and Campbell's Condensed Chicken Soup. The study also found BPA in Similac Advance Infant Formula and Nestle Juicy Juice in a can. "The BPA levels in our samples of Nestle Juicy Juice, at about 9 parts per billion, were not among the highest in the foods we tested. However, considering how many servings of juice young children may consume daily, a child still could exceed a level that Consumers Union thinks would provide an adequate margin of safety,"

- Natural selection in contemporary, western human society. : biology
- Competition in the "survival of the fittest" sense is not really precisely what natural selection is about; in fact, that idea comes from Herbert Spencer, not Darwin, and was used to promulgate a whole host of nasty ideas about "social Darwinism" that lead (perhaps directly, perhaps indirectly) to the Holocaust.
The point of natural selection is that it can't help but happen. Those who reproduce reproduce, and their genes get passed on; those who do not reproduce do not pass on their genes.
Exactly right. So "natural selection" is probably a bad phrase, in that "selection" implies some kind of external selective force. That's not the theory at all. Natural selection is passive, "it can't help but happen" and the result, given the way genetics work, is evolution. - Video: Skype Lite on Android - Skype Gear

- Google Maps Navigation Launch Aftermath: Yes, This Will Be Huge
- Well, the first reviews and reactions are in, and it seems that this is one of those GoogleGoogle products that change the landscape of an entire industry.
GPS turn-by-turn navigation has historically always been something you had to pay for. Creating and maintaining a map of the entire world, together with points of interests and traffic info, plus developing the algorithms that make sure you don't take a wrong turn, costs millions of dollars. But Google is now offering it for free. The result was devastating for shares of GPS navigation companies: Garmin's shares fell by 16.4%; TomTom's by 20.8%. We're talking billions of dollars of market capitalization, gone in one day, just because Google presented another free product (they release new products on a monthly, if not weekly basis). - Cheat Sheet: Tips and tricks for 'Uncharted 2' - Game Hunters: In search of video games and interactive awesomeness - USATODAY.com

- It's accurate to say that Windows 7 straightens out some of the problems with Vista. Aside from that, though, there aren't a whole lot of standout reasons to upgrade to the new OS, especially if you're currently on XP or you honestly don't mind Vista. The new features that are present aren't quite worth the trouble to learn how to use, and if you happen to have even slightly old equipment, forget about it.

- Under pressure from state and federal authorities who feared consumers would be misled, the food industry on Friday started backing away from a major labeling campaign meant to highlight the nutritional benefits of hundreds of products...The Smart Choices label adorns even the front of cold cereals known for high sugar content, like Kellogg's Pops. - The ACS is now telling patients that we may be over-treating the less-threatening tumors, and in the process missing more-threatening cases. Since advocating screening, the ACS acknowledges that cancer diagnoses have increased. However, for frequent screenings to actually prove beneficial to the public health, there should have been a corresponding decrease in cancer deaths. Instead, widespread screening has only led to an increase in the discovery and treatment of tumors that would have remained harmless and wouldn't have required any intervention.
