I was struck by this photo of an anorexic teen girl looking into a mirror and seeing a plumper reflection of herself. With images of ever slimmer runway models filling all the screens in a teenage girl’s life, it’s easy to imagine how impressionable young girls (or adult women for that matter) could be deluded into always seeing themselves as too fat–no matter what their true figure.
This is a story about shame. In November of 2011, former adult film actress Sasha Grey dropped by Emerson Elementary School in Compton, CA and read children’s stories to 1st and 3rd graders. The event was supposedly part of the school’s “celebrity guest reader” program, though the school initially denied her participation. Given the photo evidence, they probably just didn’t realize her background as an “adult” film actress (who also starred in Steven Soderbergh’s The Girlfriend Experience
Using historical data, Richard Wilkinson illustrates how income disparities WITHIN a society are strongly correlated with poorer general health, shorter lifespans, increased violence, less upward mobility, and much, much more. Quite shocking. Economic inequality matters.
